John Nieuwenburg

Career Background and Expertise

Retail Management at Tip Top Tailors (1970s–1980s)
John began his career at Tip Top Tailors, a national menswear retailer. He was recruited into management at age 21 and quickly advanced from the sales floor to store manager within 18 months, then to regional manager overseeing multiple stores.

At Tip Top, John earned a reputation as the “fix-it guy,” frequently parachuting into underperforming stores to turn them around. He attributes this success to strong delegation and leadership systems, which he both learned and applied before most of his peers did. Tip Top invested heavily in leadership training, and John absorbed and implemented those methods early in his career.

By his mid-20s, he was managing veteran teams decades older than himself and leading culture change within the company. The experience gave him a foundation in performance management, people leadership, and operational efficiency—skills he continues to teach in his coaching practice today.

Corporate Leadership – BC Liquor Stores (1991–mid-1990s)
After a decade in private retail, John was recruited to join BC Liquor Stores (LDB) He started as Executive Director of Retail, responsible for operations, merchandising, product, and real estate, and later became President and CEO.

During his tenure, the organization managed hundreds of stores and billions in revenue. John led the shift toward a more commercially oriented, customer-focused retail model inside a unionized workforce with multiple competing stakeholders. He was directly involved in major strike negotiations and the modernization of operations—a leadership experience that required balancing strategic, political, and human dynamics at scale.

Retail Consulting – Multiple National Brands (1997–2004)
After leaving government, John spent several years as a retail consultant for national and international brands. Between 1997 and 2004, he worked on short-term contracts—typically six months to a year—helping companies improve sales, systems, and staff performance.

His consulting clients included:

  • Spence Diamonds: Led sales training and recruitment, teaching frontline staff how to track leads, conversions, and performance metrics. Spence’s retail systems—especially their use of data-driven marketing and conversion tracking—influenced John’s later coaching frameworks.
  • Alders Duty Free: Focused on retail operations in a high-volume, international environment.
  • E.&J. Gallo Wines: Supported retail and distribution performance initiatives.

This phase, as John described, was “boots on the ground” work—hands-on operational improvement rather than executive-level strategy.

It gave him practical experience in sales systems, team training, and turnaround management across multiple sectors.

Coaching Career

ActionCOACH (2004-2008)

In 2004, John joined ActionCOACH, where he quickly ranked among the top 10–20% of coaches in North America. There he developed expertise in small-business growth systems, sales psychology, and professional service marketing.

W5 Coaching (2009–Present)
In 2010, John founded W5 Coaching, an independent practice based in Vancouver. Since then, he has worked with over 400 clients, specializing in helping owners of 5–20 person firms in professional services, construction, and trades move from overworked to in control.

He built W5’s flagship framework, “The Five Steps to Freedom”, which helps owners create a self-managing business through systems, leadership development, and profitability focus. His coaching model combines:

  • Transactional tools (systems, financial dashboards, hiring frameworks)
  • Transformational coaching (mindset and leadership shifts)
  • Accountability structures (ensuring consistent execution)
