John Nieuwenburg has been a professional business coach since 2004. Prior to becoming a coach, he held executive positions with Tip Top Tailors and BC Liquor Stores. In 2019, MacKay CEO Forums awarded him with Canada’s CEO Trusted Advisor Award in the Small Business category. Since becoming a coach, John has worked with over 350 clients, taking them through a systematic process that helps them feel organized, confident and in control of their businesses.

One of the things I appreciate most about my clients is that they are intelligent business owners.

No one comes to me throwing up their hands and saying “John! I have no idea what I’m doing! Please fix everything for me!”

Instead, they show up with specific challenges they want to resolve or results they’d like to see.

They have some awareness of where they are already strong and where they are weaker (no one is good at everything!)

And they recognize that moving forward will require some outside perspective or expertise.

To give you an example, allow me to introduce Mark, a client of mine.

Here’s what he had to say about our work together.

My goal for coaching was to free up my time so that I could focus more on sales.

I knew if I wanted to reach the next level, I’d need to break away from having my hands on everything in the business.

To get there, I needed some help organizing things and learning how to effectively delegate and have people do tasks for me.

John and I got to work right away identifying ways that I could save time.

The top three things:

  1. Using a default diary so that I could more efficiently and effectively block my time.
  2. Implementing a virtual daily huddle with my team so that I wouldn’t need to go downtown as often to meet them in person
  3. Hiring people to do things that I didn’t personally need to do. For example, I was spending a full day each week putting together information kits for prospective clients. With the right instructions, this task could be passed off to an assistant.

We’ve been working together for just over a month, and I’ve already made significant progress, including hiring a couple of virtual assistants to take things off my plate.

As a business owner, I know there are areas of business where I am very strong and other areas where I’m not very knowledgeable.

John is helping me fill in the gaps – including giving me a better understanding of business financials, reporting, and projections.

I find John enjoyable to work with and it’s nice to have an experienced and knowledgeable person to bounce ideas off.

If he sees me heading in the wrong direction, he’ll keep asking me questions until I figure things out myself.

While it’s still early in our work together, I am 100% sure that the changes I’m making through coaching will have a tremendous impact on my business success.
