The 3 Things You Need to Get More out of Your Business
Clients seek business coaching because they want “more” out of their business.
Exactly what “more” means depends on the client. It might mean:
- More money
- More time freedom
- More satisfaction
- More market share
- More clients or customers
- More locations
- More product lines
- More growth
- More achievement
Whatever “more” means to you – the way to get it is the same.
If you want more out of your business, you need 3 things: systems, people, leadership skills.
As we say at W5 – systems run the business, people run the systems, you lead the people.
Systems Run the Business
Have you ever wondered how McDonald’s can serve perfect French fries every time?
Delivering this kind of quality and consistency worldwide is an impressive feat.
It’s even more impressive when you consider that those fries are mostly made by teenagers.
The same group of people whose parents can’t get them to clean their rooms!
The magic lies in systems.
When you have systems in place: well-documented procedures, job descriptions, accounting and marketing systems – these systems run the business.
People Run the Systems
When you have documented systems in place, it becomes easier to train people.
It also makes it possible to hire people based on their character and fit with your business, instead of specific skills.
This is exactly what McDonald’s does.
They can hire people while they are still in high school – without any work experience – and train them to make those fries.
Then, it they are interested, groom them for management and leadership positions. (Where they will run more and different systems!)
You Lead the People
You move from working “in” your business (making whatever your version of “fries” is) to working “on” your business.
Developing executive leadership skills frees up your time to work on the things that only you can do.
For most business owners, this means formulating strategy, developing plans and systems, and in many cases – making the big sales.
Think of these as a 3-legged stool. You need all three legs, or the stool doesn’t stand up very well!
Without systems, you’re constantly re-inventing the wheel.
People are harder to train.
Work is done inconsistently.
Your employees constantly ask you questions.
Without people, your growth is limited.
Many of my clients could take on more business, if only they had the people to deliver!
Owners often limit their ability to grow by holding onto low-value tasks they should be delegating.
Without leadership skills, you become a bottleneck.
You become the go-to person for all the answers and decisions.
In other words, you find yourself stuck in the “hub and spoke trap.”
